A Smashing SE Sectional!

posted by Jason R Seachrist, Division Secretary, 05/17/2009

A BIG "Thank you!" must be given to Nigel Phang and his group of fencers who are based in Lakeland.  They lent a much needed hand with setup and breakdown of the tournament.  If anyone else was there helping, sorry I couldn't mention you here.

No tournament is perfect, but this year's sectional certainly seemed to move swiftly with only minor hiccups along the way.  Debbie Walker, the Southeast Secretary, and her staff maintained course and speed to wrap-up the whole affair by late afternoon today.  She is in the process of posting results, so please be patient.

The venue was a refreshing change from the usual convention halls and gymnasiums to which we are all accustomed.  There was a copious amount of space for spectators and fencers.  Even stadium seating was available, though sadly, 99% empty.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback from those who attended:  what you liked, what you disliked, what you think would be a great idea for the next sectional (or even next season's Championship).

Qualifier a Huge Success!!

posted by Jason R Seachrist, Division Secretary, 04/23/2009

First, the Division wants to thank all of you who participated in the tournament ... referees, competitors, parents, coaches and those who made the trip simply to vote!  This qualifier was much larger than last year, and the annual meeting was probably among the most important in recent years.

Secondly, we want to give a big "thanks" to Jennifer Rawlings and several parents of the Winter Garden Fencing Academy for volunteering their time to provide armory and tournament services.  Their support was much appreciated and greatly needed to keep the events moving swiftly.

Finally, everyone who lent a hand with set-up and breakdown of the tournament is a "hero"!  As we were not able to gain access to the gym Friday evening for set-up, the tournament would have started and finished late without your help.  It was wonderful to see that type of "all hands on deck" support from the membership.

The 2009 Minutes are available at the link to your right (unless you are reading this backwards in a mirror).  The bylaws are under review and will be changed to reflect the approval of absentee voting as soon as possible.

Our Chair, Ken Lauver, will be updating his "Get to the Point" page soon.  Keep an eye out for that, but an email will be sent when it is available.
